NGCU TIMELINE

  • 1938 – Industrialist R.G. LeTourneau opened an earth-moving equipment plant in Toccoa, employing thousands. That same year, the Toccoa Airport was constructed.
  • World War II – The LeTourneau plant produced vital machinery for the military, while Camp Toccoa trained paratroopers for the Army’s new airborne units. Employment at the plant grew to more than 2,000 workers.
  • 1941 – The credit union was founded and chartered as LeTourneau Federal Credit Union to serve employees of the R.G. LeTourneau plant. It was later renamed WABCO Federal Credit Union when the plant was sold to Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO).
  • 1982 – After the WABCO plant closed, the credit union reorganized as North Georgia Credit Union (NGCU) and opened membership to other local employee groups.
  • 1980s–1990s – NGCU steadily expanded by partnering with Select Employer Groups (SEGs) across Stephens and surrounding counties.
  • 2000s – NGCU extended its reach into Franklin and Hart Counties.
  • 2005 – NGCU opened the Lavonia Branch and leased space in the Lavonia South Business Center. Membership surpassed 4,400 members.
  • 2006 – NGCU gained approval to serve all residents of Stephens County (May) and Franklin County (November). Membership grew to 4,800 members with $29 million in assets.
  • 2009 – NGCU announced plans for a Hartwell Branch, renovating the former Anderson Federal Credit Union building.
  • 2010 – The Hartwell Branch opened in March, and NGCU expanded its field of membership to include all Hart County residents. Membership surpassed 5,800 members.
  • 2010s – NGCU continued to grow, adding new facilities and expanding membership into Rabun County.
  • 2015 – NGCU broke ground on a new Lavonia Branch building at 11850 Augusta Road, replacing the leased location. Membership exceeded 8,800 members.

At present, North Georgia Credit Union has $100+ million in assets and serves 12,000 members throughout North Georgia. NGCU has branch offices in Clayton, Hartwell, Lavonia, and Toccoa.
