History of North Georgia Credit Union
The story of North Georgia Credit Union (NGCU) is one of resilience and growth. Founded in 1941 as the LeTourneau Federal Credit Union, it began by serving the employees of the R.G. LeTourneau Plant in Toccoa. The credit union’s name changed to WABCO FCU when the plant was sold to Westinghouse Airbrake Company (WABCO). However, when the WABCO plant closed in 1982, NGCU faced a critical juncture. Determined to continue serving the community, the Board of Directors took decisive action. They changed the credit union’s name to North Georgia Credit Union (NGCU) and expanded membership eligibility beyond a single company. This move opened the doors to other employee groups in the area. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, NGCU experienced steady growth. In recent years, this growth has become even more significant. Today, NGCU’s charter allows the credit union to serve any corporation or government entity in Stephens, Franklin, Hart, or Rabun County that wishes to affiliate with us. Residents and employees within these counties are also eligible for membership. With over 11,800 members and $100 million in total assets, NGCU offers a full range of financial products and services. The credit union continues to evolve and adapt, solidifying its position as a strong and growing financial institution.
